Dr Leigh H. French and his wife Blanche (née Culbertson) were the subject of a society scandal in 1894 which was written about in the American tabloids.

Blanche was due to inherit a fortune from her recently deceased father, the millionaire William Culbertson, but shortly before he died, William changed his will, stating that Blanche would be disinherited should she marry Mr French as the family disapproved of his alleged philandering. Despite the scandal, Blanche and Dr French married in secret. They moved to New York and successfully sued for her part of the inheritance (see: The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, 28 June 1893 & The New York Times, 22 June 1893).

This was likely a gift from Blanche to her husband shortly before their wedding on 27 June 1893.
