The Sandberg Watch Collection

Antiquorum Geneva, 31 March 2001, lot 253

The movement of this watch dates to circa 1685 and appears to have been especially made to fit the earlier watch case. Since the case dates to c. 1660, the original movement would not have been fitted with a balance spring and it would therefore seem likely that the replacement movement was fitted in order to benefit from the superior timekeeping offered by the balance spring.

Nicholas Gribelin (1637-1719) was born in Blois, the son of Abraham and grandson of Simon Gribelin. He was made a Master at Faubourg St. Germain in 1675. Nicholas was recorded at Rue de Bucy, Paris, received a patent from the King in 1693 and had business relations with Jean de Hauteville (1647-1724) for whom he made watches of 8-day duration in 1692. See: Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, 1971, vol. 1, p.274. Watches signed by the Gribelins may be found in the collections of the British Museum, Ashmolean and Victoria & Albert Museums.

Robert Vauquer (1625-1670) was one of the most accomplished enamel painters of his day and appears to have lived his entire life in Blois. His brother Jacques was an engraver who produced a series of designs for watch cases, examples of his engravings may be found in both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum.
