A rare and unusual watch, the front dial shows lines of longitude and latitude and is designed to display the current time at any location around the world. The central gold hand is set to the time in user's current location and the time in other locations may then be found by following their closest line of longitude through to the chapter ring.
Bernard Callier (1820-1908) was recorded at the Quai St. Michel, Paris in c. 1879. He was the successor to Winnerl, won an Exhibition gold medal in 1880, was clockmaker to the Observatory, invented his own form of compensation balance in 1879, and made pieces for Les Messageries Maritimes. See: T. Mercer, Chronometer Makers of the World, NAG, 1991, p.117.
The present lot is one of two 'Montre Géographiques' known by Callier. For another example, see Antiquorum Geneva, March 2015, lot 346.
