Breguet began outfitting many of his watches with a short chain and ratchet key early on in his career. Several of these keys, such as with the present piece, were double ended. One end wound the watch through a central hole to the back of the case. The other end of the key sets the hand through the center of the winding hole, advances the date through a pusher at the side of the case, and adjusts the regulator through an additional hole to the back of the case.
The Crivelli family had a significant impact on Italian opera. Gaetano Crivelli (1774-1836) built an exceptional opera career as a celebrated tenor. He established a reputation for fully exploiting his baritone-tenor range and technique. He performed in London, Paris, and northern Italy, where he achieved most of his fame. His three sons were also musicians and continued the family’s operatic legacy. His son Domenico both composed and taught music, becoming a prominent fixture in London’s musical circles, and his two younger sons, Enrico and Giovanni sang leading baritone roles in operas both in their home country of Italy, and across Europe.
