Professeur Schumacher D'altona

Seth Atwood, Rockford Illinois

Sotheby's New York, Fine Watches from the Atwood Collection, 11 December 1986, lot 135

Professor Heinrich Christian Schumacher (1780-1850) an astronomer and mathematician was born in Bramstedt, Holstein, Germany, and studied at the Altona Gymnasium. He was a Professor of Astronomy at Copenhagen University from 1808-1813, Director of the Mannheim Observatory from 1813-1815 and Professor and Director of the Copenhagen Observatory from 1815. Schumacher was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, London, in 1821 and the Royal Society, Edinburgh, in 1822. He married Christine Madelaine Schoon in 1812 and died in Altona on 28 December 1850. (See: Former Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1783-2002, Biographical Index, 2006, p.826).

The dead centre seconds, which can be started and stopped via the slide beside the pendant, would have provided an excellent and clear means by which the Professor could time seconds during his studies.
