Movement: frosted gilded, lever escapement, 16 jewels, bi-metallic compensation balance, numbered 399169

Dial: champagne dial, black Arabic numerals, minute ring interspersed with red 24-hour markers, blued steel cathedral hands, sunken centre and subsidiary seconds, signed Ernst Borel & Cie 

Case: 14ct gold, the front cover with two polychrome enamel painted horses against a blue guilloché enamel ground, the border of opaque white enamel banding and panels of matching enamel, the reverse similarly decorated with a polychrome enamel painted horseshoe, gold polished cuvette engraved with movement details and signed and numbered Borel Fils & Cie., Neuchâtel, No.416780 and engraved H. Shmulevitch, Elizavetgrad in Cyrillic, suspended from a 14ct gold chain clip

Movement: running at time of cataloguing and surfaces and screw heads appear to be in generally good condition.


Dial: with a scuff between 8 and 9 o'clock, a couple of other scuffs, especially towards the edges The subsidiary seconds track is printed slightly off-centre to its dial.


Case: the enamel panels with a few small scratches. The back (horseshoe side) has some matt patches to the surface, difficult to tell if this is a residue or wear to the surface. The borders to both sides have a few small chips - more noticeable to the back borders than the front. The cover is stiff to open when depressing the button.

Borel & Fils are listed in Neuchatel in 1900, although the company was set up in the middle of the 19th century. They supplied many watches to important Russian clients. According to its inscription, this watch was made for a Lithuanian client. Lithuania was under the rule of the Russian Empire until the 20th century.
