J. Frederick Hellweg was awarded the Navy Cross in 1918 and eventually Retired as Rear Admiral.

While much controversy surrounds the true identity of the designer of the original American Flag, the 13 stars arranged in the pattern seen here remains one of the most recognizable. Francis Hopkinson, a U.S. Congressman, initially designed this flag around 1777. The Navy primarily used this particular flag design for practicality purposes between 1850 and 1916. The decreased number of stars meant that they could be larger and more recognizable by other ships across longer distances.
