General José de San Martín, a Spanish-Argentinian officer, led the campaign to free Chile from the Spanish Crown in the early nineteenth century. In 1817, after losing a battle to the Spanish army, General Saint Martin managed to re-group following his military losses and rebuild both the Chilean Army and its supplies. The two armies met again at the Battle of Maipu, where the Chilean patriots soundly defeated the Spanish army, effectively driving Spain out of Chile. The battle had lasting international effects, as it allowed the Chilean and Argentinian patriots to unite to drive out Spanish influence throughout South America's Pacific coast. Saint Martin's efforts also contributed greatly to the eventual liberation of Peru from Spain. General Saint Martin is regarded as a national hero today in both Argentina and Peru. The highest decoration offered by the Argentine government is named after him: The Order of the Liberator General Saint Martin.
