MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE WITH SOLDIERS IN THE FOREGROUND

oil on canvas

39 by 54 in.; 99 by 137.2 cm.

The canvas is tightly relined and is stable on its stretcher. The paint surface has been flattened by relining and the canvas weave is vaguely visible through certain areas of the sky. A landscape image reads well, however, with clear varnish. Under UV inspection, several large repairs are visible, including a repaired compound tear beginning at the top center and stretching about 20 inches diagonally down toward the left of the image. Another 14-inch long repaired horixontal tear is visible at the lower right corner as well as 2 6-inch long repairs in the right quadrant, and smaller areas of retouching throughout. We recommend contacting an independent restorer for advice. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
