The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work is lined with wax as an adhesive. The cracking is slightly raised, and a re-examination of this acidic lining might provide a better surface. Under ultraviolet light, there are retouches evident above the head of the seated figure on the far left, which seem to correct pentimenti of a previous shape of the head or hair, or possibly a hat. The dark colors in the upper sky in the center and in the upper right have weakened over time, and there are consistent retouches added from above the central tree into the upper right corner to even out the paint layer. The figures all seem to be without retouching, and the foreground is in beautiful condition. The surface would be greatly improved if the lining were re-examined, but the work could also be hung in its current state.
