Earl of Rosse, Birr Castle, County Offaly Ireland

Christie's New York, 17 October 1992, lot 314

Birr Castle has been the seat of the Parsons family (later the Earls of Rosse) since 1620, and was constructed in the 17th century on the site of an earlier structure. The present appearance is mainly due to the building activities of the 5th Baronet Sir Laurence Parson (d.1841), who 'gothicised' the castle in the early 19th century.
