The present work was commissioned from Anthony Hill by his friend and fellow artist, Adrian Heath, after he moved to Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, in the late 1950s. His house and studio was to become a hub for the new generation of Constructive artists and Heath supported contemporaries such as Hill, Pasmore and Kenneth Martin by buying their work and hanging it alongside the likes of Poliakoff and de Stael.
