明 青玉簋式爐



the compressed body carved with four rows of bosses, the sides set with a pair of loop handles each issuing from a ferocious dragon mask and suspending a hooked tab, the waisted neck centered with tiger-masks and vertical flanges in high relief against a ground of incised abstract motifs, the slightly splayed foot with similar flanges, the stone a celadon-green tone with natural fissures

See a closely related censer of this type in the National Museum of China, Beijing, published in Zhongguo guojia bowuguan guancang wenwu yanjiu congshu. Yuqi juan [Studies of the Collection of the National Museum of China. Jade], Shanghai, 2007, pl. 205, where based on the form and design a Wanli period attribution is suggested. Another similar example was included in the exhibition 80th Anniversary Exhibition of Chinese Jades from Han to Qing, S. Marchant & Son, London, 2005, cat. no., 106; a second sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 30th October 1991, lot 386; a third at Christie's New York, 13th-14th September 2018, lot 1172; and a fourth at Christie's Paris, 9th June 2015, lot 70. Compare also related censers carved with vertical ribs around the body instead of rows of bosses, such as one in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 182; and another in the Tianjin Museum, Tianjin, published in Yang Boda, ed., Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete collection of Chinese jades], vol. 2, Shijiazhuang, 2005, no. 238.
