Description

PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF H. PETER STERN

AN ILLUSTRATION TO A RAGMALA SERIES: MALKOS RAGA

INDIA, AMBER, CIRCA 1700-10

Opaque watercolor on paper heightened with gold

image: 9 ¾ by 6 in. (24.8 by 15.2 cm)

folio: 14 by 10 in. (35.5 by 25.4 cm)

Acquired in the 1980s

A young lord is attended by ladies and entertained by musicians in an open courtyard before a terraced pavilion.

The inscription above identifies the painting as a depiction of Malkos Raga. For another representation of the same subject, also from Amber and of similar date but with a slightly variant iconography, see K. Ebeling, Ragamala Painting, Basel, 1973, pps. 50-51, C13.
