MAXIMILIEN LUCE

(1858 - 1941)

LA RUE DENFERT, LES TOITS SOUS LA NEIGE

Signed Luce (lower right); signed Luce (on the reverse)

Oil on board

11½ by 15⅞ in. (29.2 by 40.3 cm)

Framed: 17¾ by 22 in. (45 by 56 cm)

Painted in 1887.

The board is sound. All four corners of the board show signs of wear, with some minor associated pigment losses. There is some minor frame abrasion in other areas along the perimeter. The surface is richly textured and the impasto is well-preserved. The reverse of the board is covered with areas of varied pigments and it is possible the artist used this side of the support to mix pigments. Under UV inspection, there are scattered small strokes of retouching in the light-colored pigments of the sky. The work is in good condition.
