(1871 - 1958)

Signed G Rouault and dated 1932 (lower center)

Oil on paper mounted on board

11⅛ by 8⅞ in. (28.3 by 22.5 cm)

Framed: 22 by 18¾ in. (55.9 by 47.6 cm)

Painted in 1932.

The board is sound. The left half of the board is slightly bowing. There is some very thin craquelure in the dark red pigments of the lower right quadrant. There is some very light pigment shrinkage in the yellow pigments of the figure's torso. Near the left upper edge, there is one very small pigment loss measuring quarter of an inch in length. There are a couple of pindot losses along the upper edge. There is a pindot loss to the pigment near the lower half of the left edge. There is some very minor wear to the lower left corner of the board and an associated pindot loss to the pigment. Under UV inspection, a thick layer of varnish is difficult to read through. There are scattered nailhead-sized strokes of retouching along the left and right edges. Some other original pigments fluoresce. The work is in good condition.
