In 1977 when Rolex had decided to cease the production of the “Double Red” Sea Dweller, they simultaneously issued a completely different watch, “Great White”, but fascinatingly, with the same reference number. The differences between the two watches is that the “Great White” does not have the word “Submariner 2000” on the dial and all the text is white. The “Great White” is a very important reference to the history of Rolex as it was the moment when Rolex had separated the production line between Submariner and Sea-Dweller.

While the “Great White” was only in production for five short years, collectors have identified four very different stylized dials. The present watch with a MK II dial is the rarest dial among all four, characterized by the unique layout of the wording “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified”, otherwise known as the “Rail Dial” by Rolex aficionados. Being extremely well preserved throughout the years, the present watch will certainly be a jewel in the current auction.
