Rolex introduced the first automatic Daytona in 1988, utilizing a heavily modified Zenith El Primero caliber. The high-frequency movement was paced-down to a more manageable 28'800 beats per hour and more than 200 modifications were made to turn the high quality caliber into a true Rolex tour-de-force. The early examples of ref. 16520 have become increasingly difficult to find, let alone in satisfactory condition. 

The present example is a truly great example. It features a rare and early black 4-line dial, omitting the "Officially Certified" script and allowing the dial to breathe. The bezel itself also has outstanding pedigree, displaying the 225 graduation to its tachymeter scale. Collectors have become particularly attentive to such details over the years, leading such an extremely scarce Daytona to become an outstanding conversation piece and a solid foundation to a high-grade collection.
