Patek Philippe launched reference 3970 in 1986 and continued production for approximately twenty years. The reference was then divided into two when Patek Philippe wanted to fit a sapphire crystal to the watch. In the late 1980s, the 3971 was introduced and was made alongside the reference 3970. In the early 1990s, Patek Philippe decided to merge the two reference having a 3970E that was fitted with both solid case back and a second sapphire option.

The present watch has a beautiful original dial that has turned a warm ivory. The case with good proportions and hallmarks to the sides of the lugs.
