the backplate formed as a spouted jug with fish-form handle, decorated with panels of interlace ornament and engraved with lengthy inscription of prayers for the Hanukah candle lighting ceremony, further inscription in Arabic on reverse

The inscriptions comprise the blessings over the Hanukah candles, as well as the traditional liturgical song Ha-nerot halalu. These are supplemented by the verse “For the commandment is a lamp, the teaching is a light” (Prov. 6:23) and the entirety of psalm 30, also recited on Hanukah.
