Ladder Back Chair
carved with the maker's "sign of the saw" cipher and dated 1901
47 3/4 x 19 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. (121.3 x 50.2 x 52.7 cm)
Overall in very good condition. The chair appears to retain its original dark finish, which presents with expected wear consistent with age and use concentrated to the seat, feet, and octagonal finials on the tops of the vertical posts of the backrest. The wood surfaces throughout with scattered surface scratches, abrasions, dents and discolorations consistent with age and use. The seat, feet, and edges of the chair throughout with slightly more concentrated abrasions and dents. The front apron below the seat with a very narrow horizontal infill to the wood grain measuring approximately 2 inches wide. The octagonal finial on the proper left vertical backrest post with a small infill measuring approximately ¾ inches wide. Both of these infills appear to be old and display a slightly more red tone compared to the rich brown of the chair, however they are only visible upon very close inspection. The area surrounding the upper faceted screw plug on the outer edge of the proper left front leg with slightly more concentrated wear, only visible upon close inspection and possibly inherent to production. The chair with some occasional minute flecks of white house paint. The finials and horizontal stretchers comprising the backrest display some extremely minor movement, stable. This chair displays beautifully in person with strong sculptural presence. A great example of one of Rohlfs' most accomplished chair designs.
