"Grand Oiseau de Marbre" Armchair and Low Table
circa 1974
executed in the Manolis Karentinos Workshop, Athens
white marble, painted iron
armchair: 41 5/8 x 66 x 44 1/2 in. (105.6 x 167.6 x 113 cm)
table: 18 7/8 x 42 1/2 x 27 3/4 in. (47.7 x 107.9 x 70.4 cm)
Overall in good condition. Rarely offered together, this armchair and its matching low table are further enhanced with exceptional provenance, having once belonged to legendary gallerist and collector Alexandre Iolas.
The marble surfaces present with variegated hues, highly textured veining and shimmering accents that enhance the dynamic and sculptural presence of the works. The proper right upper edge of the backrest, proper right armrest and proper left side of the footrest with slightly more pronounced golden tints to the marble possibly as a result of age and natural evolution of the marble.
The marble with occasional and minor surface scratches, light scattered indentations and minor abrasions throughout concentrated to the sides and edges consistent with gentle use. The adjustable beak presents with a slightly more pronounced scratch measuring approximately 2 1/2 inches wide. The recessed areas and small indentations present with occasional and very minor surface soiling which is not visually distracting.
The marble presents with evidence of prior hairline cracks located on the table’s two wings as well as two areas of the proper left armrest, the largest measuring approximately 12 inches wide on the armrest and not visible unless closely inspected. The hairlines are stable and appear to have received professional conservation at some point in the history of the pieces accompanied by buffing and inpainting to match the texture of the marble surface throughout. The restored surfaces are also accompanied with scattered pale pink spots throughout and spotty yellow spots on the table which are not visually distracting. The proper left upper edge of the footrest with an area of professional buffing and inpainting to the marble measuring approximately 1 1/4 x 3/4 inch.
The painted iron surfaces present with an overall well-preserved black paint which presents with expected wear throughout consistent with gentle use. The edges present with occasional and scattered losses to the paint, discolorations and evidence of very minor oxidation which partially reveal a red undersurface.
