painted around the exterior above the base with a band of trefoil-shaped sprigs formed from interlinked stems, all above a single line border encircling the top of the foot, the base inscribed with a six-character mark within a double circle

A similar pair of cups from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art is included Margaret Medley, Illustrated Catalogue of Porcelains Decorated in Underglaze Blue and Copper Red in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1968, p. 42, nos A688 and A689. The former cup is still in the Foundation, but the latter was sold four times in our rooms: twice in London, 15th October 1968, lot 141, and 8th July 1974, lot 306; and twice in Hong Kong, 14th November 1989, lot 74, and 11th April 2008, lot 3053.
