A BLACK-GLAZED AND CARVED VASE, MEIPING
JIN DYNASTY, 12TH/13TH CENTURY
金十二/十三世紀 黑釉刻花卉紋梅瓶
with a tall slender tapered body sweeping up to rounded shoulders, surmounted by a short waisted neck and tapering mouth, the body freely carved through a layer of dark brown slip with three main registers, the central frieze with a large peony and lotus bloom against a striated ground, all between a thin border picked out with scrolling motifs and a broad band with upright overlapping lappets

Brown-glazed meiping of this type, with carved and combed decoration, are generally attributed to kilns in Shanxi province, and a similar piece excavated in Fenyang in Shanxi is published in Zhang Bai, ed., Zhongguo chutu ciqi quanji/Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in China, Beijing, 2008, vol. 5, pl. 150. A very similar piece from the Seligman collection is illustrated in Jan Wirgin, 'Sung Ceramic Designs', Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, no. 42, 1970, pl. 55a.
A meiping in the Palace Museum, Beijing, with the design carved in sgraffiato manner to reveal the body beneath the glaze is published in Gugong Bowuyuan cang wenwu zhenpin quanji. Liang Song ciqi/The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, vol. 1, pl. 216, where it is related to finds from kilns at Datong and Hunyuan in Shanxi; and a somewhat later meiping of slightly different proportions, but similarly decorated, has been attributed by Qin Dashu to Xiangning in Shanxi, see Qin Dashu, Mai Putai & Gao Xianping, eds, Xianshi yu yaqi.
