A GOLD AND ENAMEL SCENT FLASK, SAMPSON MORDAN & CO., LONDON, CIRCA 1870,
the plain gold mounts enclosing the multicoloured enamelled spherical body and compressed circular lid, decorated with gilt-edged formal motifs and zig-zag borders, the interior of the spring-hinged lid with small glazed panel over stamped maker’s label: S. MORDAN & Co.

The enamelled decoration on this scent flask is reminiscent of the cloisonné work (enamel divided by very fine gold wires) associated with the work of Alexis Falize in Paris. Examples dating to the late 1860s of the latter’s cloisonné enamel jewellery are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, including a suite (museum no. M.5:1 to-2016) in case with the label of Hunt & Roskell, late Storr & Mortimer, goldsmiths of 156 New Bond Street. John Hunt (1811-1879), one of Hunt & Roskell’s partners who had been responsible for recruiting the French chaser, Antoine Vechte (1799-1868), purchased various items from Falize at the Paris Exposition of 1867 and later gave them to the Ashmolean Museum.
