The present work was commissioned by Yvette Guilbert in 1895 as a tile to top her tea table. After Lautrec presented her with the original design, Yvette Guilbert added the humorous inscription which appears in the lower left corner. Lautrec had the potter Emile Muller produce 12 examples and hand painted each one so that no two tiles are alike.
