The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:
This work is lined with wax as an adhesive. The cracking is very slightly raised in the upper left, but the paint layer is stable. The painting is cleaned, varnished, and retouched. There are two horizontal restorations in the sky—one in the upper center running about 4 inches and one in the upper left measuring about 2 ½ inches. These may correspond to breaks in the canvas. There are no restorations in the water or rocks. The only other retouches are in the center and to the left of center on the top edge. The work can be hung in its current state.
