The model Tête de Femme was designed by Alberto Giacometti in 1933 and belongs to a group of decorative objects commissioned from the artist by the famous interior designer Jean-Michel Frank between 1932-1940. The original plaster model made by Giacometti around 1937 is now in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. The design, which recalls architectural caryatids, is instantly recognizable as one of Giacometti’s most successful designs. Although there is no direct historical reference, the form of the head evokes ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian sculpture which fascinated Giacometti.
