"It was very special to meet Keizo Kitajima in 2015, our first meeting with one of Japanese photography masters, and looking at works from his wonderful series 'New York' together. Daido Moriyama, with whom Kitajima first studied photography, praised his talent as a gifted snapshooter by calling him ‘a street killer in broad daylight." After having spent six months in New York in the early 1980s, Kitajima presents a vision of 1980s New York as full of energy, decadence, and moments of quiet desperation. Like the city, the publication is full of stark juxtapositions; flamboyant displays of glamorous behavior are shown next to pictures of desolation and dejection." - Martijn van Pieterson
