gelatin silver print, 1972-74

image: 7 1/4 by 6 1/4 in. (18.4 by 15.9 cm.)

Please note the colors in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. This gelatin silver print is in generally excellent condition. Visible only in raking light are creases near the lower right edge, which do not appear to break the emulsion. There are scattered faint hairline scratches. The margin edges and corners are worn and creased. In the left margin there is a dark stain, likely from processing. The upper margin is heavily creased. The reverse is lightly soiled. 'C 68' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil.

Gift of the photographer to a fellow student at the Rhode Island School of Design, early 1970s
Chris Townsend, Francesca Woodman (London, 2006), p. 76 (variant)

“Francesca Woodman, known for her bold insistence that we look at her unclothed and unmasked is precariously positioned, naked, over the root system of a mighty large tree that has succumbed to its fate. The combination of tender and tough and life and death seem autobiographical and thoroughly poignant." - Robert Klein
