"In 2008, I was pleased to curate an exhibition of the work of Hiromi Tsuchida an accomplished artist who, at the time, was not as recognized in the West as other Japanese photographers of his generation. The photograph offered here is from the series and publication Zokushin (Gods of the Earth). For this body of work, Tsuchida travelled across Japan photographing people at traditional festivals and sacred sites. His photographs create a complex picture of how traditions of the past blend with modern ideas to form a contemporary Japanese identity." - Michael Dawson
