STILL LIFE WITH A FORKHEAD HAKE, SEA BASS, CRAB AND OTHER FISH
oil on canvas
canvas: 29 ⅜ by 42 inches (74.6 by 106.7 cm)
framed: 39 ½ by 50 ¼ inches (100.3 by 127.6 cm)
The canvas is lined and is stable on its stretcher. Overall the images reads strongly, though the surface is dirty and the varnish has yellowed somewhat. There are no instabilities or losses visible on the surface. Some minor abrasion is visible near the extreme edges due to old frame abrasion, but this is not distracting. Some of the darker details have lost definition with age. Under UV: The varnish is thick and milky. There is a horizontal line of restoration running across the lower edge, possible to address an expansion or re-stretching of the canvas. Scattered spots and strokes of retouching and strengthening are scattered throughout. Some broader and brushier areas of retouching are visible in some of the darks, for example in the background above the large fish at center, in the background and in the fish to the right of the large fish at center, and in the lower left corner. Scattered spots of retouching are also in the upper background, including an old retouched repair near the center of the upper edge. Some thin strokes of retouching in the upper right corner. The painting may improve with a clean. Offered in a dark wood frame with decoratively carved gilding.
