Château Cheval Blanc 1949
St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A)
u. 1hs, 1 just below m/s, labels slightly damaged and badly soiled, shipped by Cruse Fils Frères, bottled in London by Block Grey & Block, embossed metal capsules, 1 slightly damaged
Vintage from 26 September to 9 October. A high-temperature, dry summer led to a small crop of 25 hl/hectare where the Cabernet Franc dominated. 12.4% alcohol. This has always been one of the great Cheval Blancs and a perfect wine throughout its life. Slightly roasted berries nose. Pure bliss. Liquid cocoa. Unbelievable balance of fruit, acidity and tannin. Everlasting in its total beauty and chocolate aftertaste with the whole Cheval Blanc identity stamped all over it. Approaching its 60th birthday, it is a miracle, when from perfect provenance. In 2011 at the Château, a gentle perfumed nose, with a little Marmite. So complex, so chocolatey and so meaty on the palate, finishing "sweet". Taste of roses and red fruits. One wants to linger long over it. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
