the rectangular writing box with overhanging cover and rounded corners, decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and inlaid in lead and silver foil with a ferry boat and oarsman in swirling waters, the interior with fitted tray, slate inkstone and bronze water-dropper, the interior of the cover continuing the design from the front depicting the ferry boat carrying Prince Niou and Ukifune along the Uji River to the Islet of Oranges from Genji Monogatari [Tale of Genji]
