Folio (330 x 250 mm). 147 linoleum-engravings by Matisse, including 50 printed in black (of which 18 are full-page), 84 initial letters and repeated headpieces printed in red, upper and lower covers printed in blue and white and bound in. Full black calf, spine lettered in blue calf inlays, covers with abstract design of blue and white calf onlays, red calf pastedowns and red suede liners, all edges gilt, by Honnelaitre. Half black calf chemise with blue calf lettering on spine and slipcase with black calf borders. 


Matisse's sublime Pasiphaé in a sympathetic binding, accompanied by an ALS regarding the book.Copy 211 of 250 numbered copies signed by Matisse.

Matisse writes to Mme. Gras, "… il n'y a que la correction du texte qui puisse se faire sans moi — et je n'aurais pas pensé à vous déranger pour cela, je l'aurais indiqué comme j'aurais pu, en ignorant mais en volontaire. Il y a surtout la composition, pour grosseur des caractères, vous et moi, de causer. Au nom de l'auteur absent et du travail important qui a déjà été fait pour cet ouvrage je vous prie de venir un instant à Cimiez, au Régina, car je ne puis me déplacer étant au lit depuis des mois."
