In 8s (216 x 165 mm). Frontispiece and 173 text illustrations by E. W. Kemble, photogravure plate of a portrait bust of Clemens by Karl Gerhardt (BAL state 1), title-leaf a cancel with copyright notice dated 1884. Publisher's pictorial green cloth, stamped in gilt and black, peach-colored endpapers, plain edges; slight rubbing at extremities. Half green morocco slipcase, chemise.
A fine, bright copy of the first American edition, early state, with BAL points: page [13], state 1; page 57, state 1; page 155, state 1; page 283, state 3.
