First separate French edition of an important survey of the coasts of Yemen and Oman

First published in the London Geographical Journal, this French edition is a separately-published extract from the Annales Hydrographiques. The work is translated by J. Passama and J. de la Vaissiere de Laverge.

"During the first few decades of the nineteenth century the East India Company came to appreciate the strategic nature of the coast of South Arabia and the necessity for checking the advance of the Turks in that direction. In addition, because the company needed to establish coaling stations for its increasing fleet of steamships, a number of vessels were dispatched to locate suitable sites" (Howgego W-20). Among the most important expeditions was the voyage of the Palinurus under command of Haines.

Rare, with only the example at the Bibliotheque Nationale located in OCLC.
