COZZENS, F. S.
AMERICAN YACHTS, THEIR CLUBS AND RACES. NEW YORK: SCRIBNER'S, [1884]
26 chromolithographs (plate: 20 3/4 x 14 3/8 in.; 526 x 366 mm). 25 views, heightened with varnish, and one further plate of flags, each mounted on board ruled and decoratively blindstamped and embossed with oars and ships wheel, printed title labels to mounts, original labels to versos; some toning and spotting, with spotting primarily affecting mounts, with the exception of "The Brave Old America," some offsetting to mounts.
A magnificent pictorial record of the golden age of yacht racing in America
The present images span events over three decades, beginning with the first "America" race at Cowes, England in 1851. A total of nearly eighty yachts (mostly the cutters and schooners favored in the 1870s) are depicted in actual races, including the successful defenders Magic (1870), Sappho (1871), Madelaine (1876), and Mischief (1881). This set does not contain the small volume of accompanying text by J.D. Jerrold Kelly.
Fred Schiller Cozzens was primarily self-taught as an artist, and the present collection remains his best-known work.
