THE NIGHT RAID

indistinctly signed Henrik Ankarcrona and dated 1877 (lower right)

oil on canvas

canvas: 23⅞ by 39½ in.; 60.6 by 100.3 cm

framed: 33 by 48¾ in.; 83.8 by 123.8 cm

Oil on unlined canvas, not examined out of the frame. The surface is in generally good condition, aside from scattered, stable craquelure and faint stretcher bar marks: horizontal along upper edge and vertical down the center. Under UV light, the surface is obscured by a heavy green fluorescing varnish, though two brushy circular areas of restoration in the sky at center right; isolated fine inpainting to address prior craquelure in the sky; a few pin dots of inpainting near upper center edge; and scattered inpainting to address prior craquelure along lower edge are still visible.

Framed in a gold frame with classical motifs and ready to hang in its current state.
