Esperando La Pesca (Waiting for the Catch)

signed J. Mongrell lower left

oil on canvas

Unframed: 50 by 70cm., 19¾ by 27½in.

Framed: 81.5 by 102cm., 32 by 40¼in.

The canvas is unlined. There is a stretcher mark corresponding to the horizontal upper and lower stretcher bars. Ultra-violet light reveals broad strokes of strengthening in the sky (these may be more extensive than is necessary), and much smaller spots elsewhere notably in the ladies' faces and the bulls in the left; there is also unusual fluorescence in the basket and parts of the interior of the boat in the foreground, which are less clearly associated with retouching and may correspond to the artist's pigments. Apart from a layer of surface dirt which could be removed with a professional clean, overall this work presents well under normal light and is ready to hang.

José Mongrell is regarded as one of the foremost Sorollistas, the group of Spanish artists inspired by the light and subjects of Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923). Sharing Sorolla's delight in recording everyday life by the sea, Mongrell nevertheless developed his own distinct style. His paintings display the strong attention to form and composition that he learned from his teachers Pinazo and Domingo.
