The following condition report has been prepared by Hamish Dewar Ltd., 13 and 14 Mason's Yard, St James', London, SW1Y 6BU:

UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Structural Condition

The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what certainly appears to be the artist's original, four member, keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a stable structural support. The stretcher features numerous woodworm holes which appear to be historic. The stretcher keys are held in position with nails which have been tapped into the stretcher members.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. The paint surface displays an overall pattern of slightly raised craquelure including corresponding to the four stretcher members. These are stable. There are scattered networks of fine lines of drying craquelure within the architecture and the foreground. These are also stable and are attributable to the natural drying processes of the artist's materials. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows small scattered retouchings, including:

1) a number of very small scattered retouchings within the sky,

2) several retouchings on the extreme edges including a line of retouching on the upper part of the right edge and a few minor retouchings below the signature in the extreme lower right corner, and

3) a few very minor spots and lines of strengthening to the roof of the opera house and very minor retouchings within the foreground, including strengthening to the torsos of the two figures on horseback in the lower right and minor retouchings around the child and the man in the top hat in the lower left corner. It should be noted that these retouchings are all of minimal size and have been very carefully applied.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition.
