Amongst seven sons and two daughters, Dr Robert Fraser raised six working artists, the ‘Fraser Brotherhood’. All of the brothers showed talent, and worked in a similar style, but William, the best of them, used the name Garden (traditional in the family) in order to distinguish himself from his siblings. The family lived at Hemingford Grey, a small village down the Great Ouse from Bedford, where they rented the manor house.

It has been suggested, based upon the architecture of the church spire, that the present view depicts the village of Over, Fenstanton, St.Ives, Hemingford Abbots or Offord Darcy in the St. Ives area of the Ouse Valley.
