Dicksee painted the Kappellbrucke (Chapel Bridge) on Lake Lucerne in 1884 whilst on a sketching holiday with the sculptor William Hamo Thornycroft. The trip was paid for with the last of the money from Dicksee's Travelling Scholarship won at the Royal Academy Schools.
