Painted in 1850, the present work shows Kruseman at the height of his powers, with its balanced composition and masterful rendering of ice. The painting may be compared with another work of the same year recorded in Marjan van Heteren & Jan de Meere, Frederik Marinus Kruseman: Painter of Pleasing Landscapes, Schiedam, 1998, p. 173, no. 64.
