Fought on 8 October 1805, the Battle of Wertingen in Bavaria saw a victory for the French forces led by Marshal Joachim Murat and Marshal Jean Lannes over Lieutenant-Field Marshal Franz von Auffenberg's outnumbered Austrian forces.

Lami was a favourite of King of the French Louis-Philippe during whose reign the present work was painted, and a natural choice to join the king’s project to create a museum of French history in the palace of Versailles. The final version of the battle of Wertingen was never completed and is known today only from this sketch.
