The Rev. Sandford, Weston-super-Mare

Clifford, a friend of John Ruskin, and at one point, assistant to Burne-Jones, rarely exhibited his landscapes, showing mainly portraits instead. However, his involvement with the Church Army and their missionary work often gave him the opportunity to sketch his local surrounds, from Hawaiian volcanoes, to the hills of Pakistan. This watercolour was painted in 1900, and belonged to the Reverend Sandford, who presumably was connected to Clifford through the Church Army.
