Born in Mexico in 1936, Rodolfo Nieto was a key member of Generación Ruptura, a group of artists whose explosive abstract innovations in color and form changed the face of Mexican painting from the 1950s onward, in firm departure from the dominance of the Muralists in the early twentieth century. Nieto's paintings, rich in tonality and mythological pictorial idiom, are marked by the dual influences of European Modernism (he spent several years in the atelier of famed printmaker Stanley William Hayter in Paris) and the indigenous art of his native Oaxaca.
