Adam McEwan’s conceptual work draws together future and past, history and fiction, celebration and melancholy. Untitled from 2014 stems from his body of Sponge Paintings, in which he appropriates minimal black and white photographs and prints them on sheets of cellulose sponge. A staple of kitchen cleanliness, they have the smoky allure of charcoal drawings, until the bubbles come into focus. McEwen’s works are in the public collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum; and Arts Council Collection, London.
