A LARGE CHINESE 'HONGMU' AND MIXED HARDWOOD THREE-DRAWER COFFER (LIANSANCHU)

LATE QING DYNASTY, CIRCA 1900


the single-board top set into a mitered, mortise and tenoned frame with separate everted ends, above a frieze of three short drawers, flanked by long tapering shaped spandrels, and a pair of hinged doors divided by a central stile, bordered by two outer panels, all above a short apron carved with a floral scroll, with baitong mounts

Known in the West as altar coffers and in China as lianerchu, these tables were traditionally kept in women’s quarters where they were used to hold cosmetics and accessories, and were part of a woman’s dowry. Tables of this classic design were made from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) onwards.
