QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY

One of the Daoist immortals and the popular God of Wealth, Liu Hai is nearly always depicted with his three-legged toad conveying a wish for prosperity. According to legend Liu Hai was a Tang dynasty Minister of State and alchemist. As an ardent and proficient student of Daoist magic, he was taught the secret of immortality from the Chan Chu, the Three-legged Toad.
